'Test yourself the morning after', drivers told

Drivers have been encouraged to make use of a personal breathalyser if they have had a drink the night before getting behind the wheel.

According to AlcoSense, which manufactures the device, 51 per cent of people are estimated to drive the morning after without being aware that they could be over the legal limit.

The group added that one in five people caught for drink-driving are caught the day after they have had a drink and four pints of beer or three large glasses of wine can take as long as 12 hours to leave someone's system.

Katie Shephard, fundraising manager for national road safety charity Brake, said: "Most people don’t even consider that after a night of moderate drinking they may still be over the limit to drive well into the next day."

Earlier this week, the Institute of Advanced Motorists stated that 50 per cent of Britain's 32 million motorists have confessed to having driven after drinking alcohol.
