'Electric cars given boost by government energy initiative'

The government's launch of its renewable energy consultation last week will lead to more electric cars being seen on British roads, it has been claimed.

Gordon Brown's announcement that renewable energy will supply 15 per cent of the UK's power by 2020 will lead to the vehicles becoming greener and electricity generation becoming less reliant on fossil fuels, according to car manufacturer NICE.

Evert Geurtsen, co-founder of the firm, said the government has taken a significant step forward in its quest for truly sustainable transport.

"There is now a clear understanding that the environmental benefits of electric vehicles will develop hand-in-hand with an increase in renewable energy supply," he added.

Mr Guertsen went on to say that although they do not depend on a "renewable energy revolution", they will benefit when it arrives.

Last week, insurance provider More Th>n predicted UK demand for greener telematics-based motor insurance products is likely to rise in the face of rising fuel prices.
