Emissions targets for new cars will lower motorists running costs as well as benefit the environment, transport secretary Ruth Kelly has claimed.
The government is proposing the introduction of compulsory CO2 targets for new cars, requiring fleet average emissions not to exceed 130g of CO2 per kilometre by 2012.
Ms Kelly said driving more fuel efficient cars could reduce running costs by around £500 a year for new vehicle buyers by 2020.
"Tackling climate change is one of the single most important issues we face. Harmful road transport emissions continue to rise and it is important we act now to reduce them," she continued.
Ms Kelly added the measures should not unfairly impact on car manufacturers, particularly those which produce niche vehicles or a small volume of vehicles.
Earlier this week, Kwik-Fit claimed making sure tyres are correctly inflated is eco-friendly, a sensible safety measure and can save drivers money.
