Hybrid vehicles remain the top green for motorists who are concerned about the environment, according to an advice publication on eco-friendly vehicles.
Jay Nagley, publisher of Clean Green Cars, stated that while electric car technology is not yet advanced enough for the mass market, hybrid vehicles are an option to consider.
Mr Nagley added that a series of next-generation plug-in hybrids - the first of which is expected to appear by 2010 - represents one of the most significant ways in which fuel consumption can be reduced in the motoring industry.
He also offered advice on customers seeking a greener option now, explaining that many manufacturers now offer an eco-friendly "sub-brand" to complement existing lines - such as Ford's Kinetic range or VW's Blue Motion.
Research carried out by esure has indicated that younger motorists are the most likely to consider eco-friendly vehicles, with 81 per cent of the under-25s surveyed admitting they would be interested in driving an electric vehicle.
