Tyre pressure 'can save cash and climate'

Ensuring tyres are inflated correctly is both eco-friendly and frugal, according to motoring experts.

While the safety risks of flat tyres are well known and documented, Kwik-Fit claim there are other serious drawbacks to poor pressure wheels.

The firm estimates 12 million motorists could cut fuel bills by a combined £1.4 billion a year by inflating their tyres, with just one flat guzzling eight per cent more petrol.

In addition, tyre under-inflation can cause an extra 2.2 million tonnes of carbon to enter the atmosphere in 12 months alone.

According to Kwik-Fit, nearly half of all cars in the UK are driven with at least one wheel below the correct pressure, more than double the number found in last year's spot check.

Further green motoring advice is available at this week's G8 summit in Japan, where world leaders and other officials are to be offered a glimpse of the latest electric, hybrid and fuel cells cars.
