Past 'can teach about road safety future'

Previous approaches to road safety in the UK can teach people about modern-day motorist protection, it has been claimed.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa), eight people are killed and 700 injured on British roads every day, despite improvements in safety.

The group is currently seeking speakers for its 74th Road Safety Congress, which will be held in Blackpool between February 23rd and 25th 2009 and address the strategies and targets needed to reduce road deaths in the next decade and beyond.

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at Rospa, said: "We must particularly consider the fact that improvements have not been experienced evenly by all road users and some groups have fared better than others.

He went on to say road safety concerns at the conference will overlap with policy areas such as the environment, public health, sustainable transport, policing and employment practices.

Earlier this month, the Sentencing Guidelines Council stated drivers ought to go to jail for offences involving prolonged, persistent and deliberate bad driving.
