'Ride to work', motorbike owners urged

Motorbike owners have been encouraged participate in Ride to Work Day this Wednesday (July 16th).

Frank Finch, head of Motorcycle Associations for the Retail Motor Industry Federation, said that the benefits of motorbike riding include a faster commute and reduced congestion.

"With motorcycles and scooters typically being far more economical than a car and with fuel costs rising, it is also a cheaper option," he added.

Referring to Ride to Ride to Work day, he continued: "Ride-outs are increasingly popular with many motorcyclists, as they enable riders to enjoy their machines and meet other owners."

The organisation went on to emphasise the convenience and flexibility of bike riding and the lower fuel costs that it involves.

Last week, motorcycle journalist Alastair Walker reported that safety ratings for motorcycle helmets are now being provided by the Department for Transport, with some major manufacturers such as Arai, Shoei and AGV only receiving three out of five stars according to the new system.
