UK drivers 'running on empty'

Motorists are increasingly driving when their petrol tanks are almost empty as a result of rapidly rising fuel costs, it has emerged.

According to research carried out by insurance provider Britannia Rescue, 340,000 drivers have broken down because they have run out of fuel in the last three months.

Some 47 per cent of all motorists admit to running their car with a minimum of fuel and one in five drivers say due to high fuel prices they can no longer afford to fill their tank up, the study found.

Emma Holyer, spokesperson for the firm, said: "Increases in fuel prices are hitting drivers hard, especially against a background of rising food and housing costs.

"Drivers who run their car on empty are also at high risk of breaking down."

Earlier this week, price comparison website insurance.co.uk recommended motorists change the manner in which they drive, in order to cut down their motoring costs.
