Bird droppings 'cause £57 million car damage'

Repairing the damage to cars caused by bird droppings costs UK motorists almost £57 million a year, new research has found.

Studies by insurance firm Zurich found 89 per cent of car owners have been affected by a 'bird strike', with drivers in the south-west of the country being worst-affected.

However, just one in five motorists said they remove the mess immediately, with 30 per cent waiting until they next get around to washing their car.

Guy Merchant, a bird control expert, said mid-March to the end of August is the worst time of the year for bird droppings.

"The influx of birds and the early summer sun is a costly combination for car owners as the hot weather bakes the excrement into paintwork, and if left untreated, causes major damage to the exterior of cars," he added.

Last week, a study by car care company Comma found 26 million British drivers risk damage to their vehicles because they do not know what the oil light on their dashboard means.
