Car insurance costs encouraging people to dodge it

The rising costs of car insurance are encouraging people to avoid acquiring a policy, it has been claimed.

According to figures from the price comparison firm comparethemarket.com, the typical cost of car insurance is rising at a rate of around six per cent each year and the increases have been particularly steep for young drivers.

Meanwhile, the cost of being caught without a car insurance is only around £250, which effectively encourages some people to take the risk of driving without motor insurance.

Government figures suggest there are close to two million uninsured drivers on British roads and if car insurance premiums keep rising this statistic could as well, comparethemarket.com maintains.

"The government must act to reduce the number of illegal drivers on Britain's roads through more severe penalties," said Jeremy Moll from the price comparison company.

Meanwhile, the Retail Motor Industry Federation recently urged British drivers to prepare their cars if they plan to make a long journey to their holiday destination.
