Consumers warned about 'attack of the car clones'

Auto dealers should do more to protect themselves from the growing threat of car cloning, it has been claimed.

Vehicle data expert HPI states there are simple but effective measures car traders can use to resist this type of car crime and prevent themselves from losing money.

Criminals can create a clone of a car by replacing the number plates and vehicle identification number on their car with the stolen identity from an almost identical vehicle that has the same make, model and colour.

Daniel Burgess, automotive director of HPI, said: "We are staggered by how many clone claims we get from consumers who have paid less than 70 per cent of the market value for the car. Why didn't alarm bells ring?"

He went on to add those who buy a clone car stand to lose the vehicle and the money paid for it.

Earlier this week, British Car Auctions stated used car sales are on the slide following a 3.9 per cent fall in transactions in June.
