Drivers warned to keep sat navs out of sight

Merseyside motorists are being warned to keep vehicles locked and valuables out of sight to avoid becoming a victim of car crime this Christmas.

Police have issued a warning to St Helens residents after a spate of thefts in the area, with sat nav systems, i-pods, mobile phones and other such items being targeted by crooks.

Crime reduction officer Michelle Harrison told the public to lock up their vehicles and remove belongings and spare change from show - and warned that even hiding items in glove boxes and boots was not enough to keep offenders at bay.

She also advised drivers to invest in a steering lock this Christmas, with the devices acting as "a good deterrent" to opportunist thieves.

"Together let's make the car thieves lives difficult and stop people from being victims of this sort of crime," Mrs Harrison urged.

Nottinghamshire police issued a similar caution earlier this week, advising drivers to "remove all temptation" for thieves by taking belongings with them when they leave their vehicles.ADNFCR-1381-ID-18860120-ADNFCR
