The recent increase in the number of foreign lorries in the UK is making Britain's roads less safe, it has been claimed.
According to insurer Liverpool Victoria, the number of heavy goods vehicles from the European Union (EU) has increased by almost one-third since 2001 and is expected to rise by a further 18 per cent by 2013.
Research carried out by the group indicates claims involving EU truck drivers have increased by 60 per cent in the last seven years and many accidents are the result of left-hand-drive vehicles having a blind spot on the right side.
John O'Roarke, managing director of the company, said: "Over the last seven years we have seen a significant increase in the number of accidents involving lorries from overseas."
He added the firm is calling on the government to bring in laws requiring left-hand drive heavy goods vehicles to be fitted with blind spot mirrors to help prevent accidents.
Earlier this week, studies by Accident Exchange found one in five of all road accidents involves a stationary vehicle.
