A gang which made money by staging accidents and then claiming on car insurance has been put in prison for ten years.
The 'crash for cash' gang were sentenced at St Albans crown court, following a two-year investigation by the police, reports the St Albans Observer.
Over its time in operation the team amassed £250,000 by claiming for collisions which never occurred.
The prosecution is one of the first of its kind in the UK.
Julian Griffiths, the detective constable who worked on the case, told the newspaper: "This outcome sends out a clear message to fraudsters that their activities will be uncovered by the police and specialist agencies."
He added that £1 million in assets has been restrained from those convicted and "enables us to hit criminals where it hurts - in their pockets".
Judge Martin Griffith, who sentenced the group, said the crimes are serious an impact on everyone's car insurance.
