'Half of UK' worried about petrol prices

A survey suggests nearly half of the UK is concerned about rising fuel prices, prompting a financial website to call on the government to slash petrol taxes.

Fool.co.uk found 46 per cent of people are most concerned about petrol price inflation, with worries about food in second place and rising energy prices in third.

The figures also show differences between genders, with exactly half of all men worried about petrol prices compared to 39 per cent of women.

Fool.co.uk said the government "can easily reduce our main inflation stresses by slashing fuel tax as a top priority".

The site also said 60 per cent of the current advertised price for unleaded petrol is taken in taxes.

Fool.co.uk head of personal finance David Kuo said the government should put motorists' "worries to bed" by reducing fuel duty.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn recently said fuel prices would mean drivers "think more carefully about the journeys they make", according to the Daily Mail.
