Ministers have put together a deal to prevent disqualified motorists from driving in Britain and Ireland.
The agreement means UK drivers disqualified in Ireland will not be able to drive when they return home and Irish drivers will face the same penalty if they commit an offence in Britain.
According to the Department for Transport, the deal will target the most dangerous drivers.
Noel Dempsey, the Irish minister for transport said: "This deal on the mutual recognition of disqualified drivers across all three jurisdictions is good news for road users."
He added: "Now disqualified drivers will be kept off the roads in Ireland and the UK and that makes real road safety sense."
Last week, online financial adviser Fool.co.uk claimed UK drivers planning to take out motor insurance should consider how much risk they can afford to bear and how much money they can afford to pay in the current uncertain economic climate.
