More join car clubs as costs rise

More and more motorists are ditching their own vehicles and joining regulated car clubs in a bid to counteract the rising costs of running a vehicle in the UK, it has been claimed.

City Car Club in Edinburgh has seen a rise of 57 per cent in the number of new clients following the announcement that car tax will rise for up to nine million UK motorists, the Sunday Herald has reported.

James Finlayson, chief executive of City Car Club, told the newspaper: "Clearly the huge rise in the cost of motoring has made many motorists in Edinburgh realise they need to change the way they own and use a car."

Meanwhile, Whizgo, another car club in the area, has seen a similar increase of 29 per cent in new members.

In related news, the BBC has reported MPs remain sceptical over prime minister Brown's plans to increase car tax for "gas- guzzling" vehicles and say while the proposed increases are a "step in the right direction", more needs to be done.
