Motorists want a crack down on young drivers

Many motorists want a crackdown on the safety of young drivers, with three-quarters saying they fear being on the road with them.

A survey by Autoglass has found one-third of people rate drivers between the age of 17 and 20 as a serious threat to road safety, MotorsToday.co.uk reports.

The majority of those in the poll wanted the government to get tough on these drivers with over two-thirds thinking they should only be allowed vehicles with a small engine.

Nigel Doggett, the managing director for Autoglass, told the website: "It is clear that many drivers are afraid of young motorists and want to see restrictions put in place to help them gain valuable driving experience but with lower risk to themselves and others."

He added that "too many" young people are involved in accidents on the road and the survey showed how motorists perceive young drivers.

According to uSwitch.com, young drivers pay on average double for their car insurance.
