Speed camera vandalism rises

There has been a spike in the amount of vandalism directed at speed cameras – spelling out that the devices might be more in need of insurance than cars.

Under current estimates, the government earned £100 million a year from speeding fines, which are thought to have affected as many as eight million people.

However, some drivers are not prepared to see their car insurance rocket after a speeding conviction and have taken matters into their own hands.

One of the worst areas for attacks on speed cameras is a stretch of Birmingham Road in the West Midlands.

The region has seen attacks on speed cameras rise to 13 for the year ending in March 2008 compared with nine during the same period the previous year.

While some cameras have been smashed with rocks, they have usually been set on fire, the Telegraph reported.

On New Year's Eve a new speed camera in north-east Lincolnshire was torched before it had chance to issue its first £60 ticket, reported the Grimsby Telegraph.
