Tyre checks can reduce crashes and insurance costs

Motorists have been advised they could help themselves avoid road accidents and significant car insurance costs by checking their tyres for signs of old age and deterioration.

Vehicles that are rarely used are deemed to be among those most at risk of having poor quality and potentially unsafe tyres, the RAC Foundation explained.

Research by the organisation found the vast majority of people are aware of the dangers of driving with old tyres but there are tens of thousands of UK consumers who do not.

Indeed, close to three million Britons in total are believed to be ignorant of the potential car insurance costs and the risks of road accident that unsuitable tyres can pose.

"Older tyres that have been stored incorrectly or simply not used for many years can become unfit for purpose through the passage of time alone," Sheila Rainger, deputy director of the RAC Foundation, made clear.

Figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents have shown that eight people are killed and 700 injured on roads around the UK on a daily basis.ADNFCR-1381-ID-18712790-ADNFCR
