Vehicle theft down 12 per cent

The number of motorists facing car insurance hikes after having their vehicles stolen fell significantly in the last year, according to Home Office figures.

Car thefts fell by 12 per cent in the year ending June 2008 as police crackdowns paid off, but UK vehicle recovery expert Tracker is warning that motorists should not be misled by the data.

The organisation revealed that most instances occur when thieves steal car keys from drivers' homes - a crime that is classified as burglary rather than vehicle theft.

Thus, despite an improvement in statistics, Tracker's police relationships manager Stuart Chapman warned that motorists should not "be lulled into a false sense of security".

He added that owners should "remain vigilant" to avoid rising car insurance premiums as criminals begin to develop "more and more sophisticated tricks" to get their hands on stolen vehicles.

Recently, Tracker also issued advice on a new criminal technique called jamming, in which thieves are able to block satellite signals to prevent stolen cars being traced by GPS systems.ADNFCR-1381-ID-18860129-ADNFCR
