DfT brings in new parking laws

The government has outlined plans to tackle illegal and inconsiderate parking, it has been revealed.

Rosie Winterton, transport minister, said double parking and stopping in front of dropped footways will be clamped down on and local authorities will individually publicise their plans to enforce the new legislation.

"Dropped footways are provided to help wheelchair users and those with powered mobility vehicles or prams get around easily and safely," she added.

"They also allow residents to easily reach their garages or park on their driveways."

Ms Winterton went on to say double parking is a dangerous activity, which causes an unnecessary obstruction of the road and puts other drivers at risk.

Last week, the Department for Transport (DfT) outlined new regulations targeting hauliers and non-UK drivers who break traffic laws.

From next year, police and examiners from the Vehicle Operator and Services Agency will be given powers to issue penalty points against a non-UK driver's record for endorsable offences.
