Summer driving and drink 'don't mix'

UK motorists have been told not to get behind the wheel if they have an alcoholic drink this summer.

In making the comments, the Institute of Advanced Motorists cited figures showing 50 per cent of Britain's 32 million motorists have confessed to having driven after drinking alcohol.

The group went on to say only a small amount of alcohol can affect a person's ability to drive and even if a driver is within the limit, their judgement can still be affected.

"If you drive at twice the legal limit, you are 30 times more likely crash, and a long sleep or a large cup of coffee after drinking the night before may not be the quick fix you expected," the organisation added in a statement.

Last week, insurer Liverpool Victoria claimed the recent increase in the number of foreign lorries in the UK is making Britain's roads more dangerous and claims accidents involving EU truck drivers have increased by 60 per cent in the last seven years.
