Young Welsh drivers offered safety course

Young motorists in Wales will be given the opportunity to improve their driving skills during a month-long course of lessons, it has emerged.

The scheme, which is run by qualified driving instructors and is aimed at 17 to 25 year olds who hold a full driving licence, will begin on August 5th

Drivers who complete the series of theory and practical sessions may be entitled to reduced motor insurance costs.

Councillor Gwilym Evans, a board member responsible for road safety, said: "Young drivers are our second most vulnerable road user and I truly believe that this course provides invaluable information and skills that will help reduce the number of collisions on our roads."

This week, the Road Safety Foundation named a 13 kilometre section of road between Macclesfield and Buxton as the UK's most deadly.

The area has seen 43 fatal or serious collisions since 2001, almost three-quarters of them involving motorcyclists, according to the group.
